Vernaccia

Region of Origin

The vineyards of San Gimignano flourish in a Mediterranean climate with dry summers and mild winters. Temperatures range from -5°C to 37°C, and rainfall is typically concentrated in the spring and late autumn. The region enjoys excellent ventilation, with only occasional fog, contributing to the optimal ripening of the grapes.

San Gimignano's terroir is ideal for producing world-class wines. While the prestigious Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG stands as the region’s flagship wine, the San Gimignano DOC further showcases the area’s winemaking prowess. Additionally, the region cultivates grapes for Chianti, Chianti Colli Senesi, and IGT Toscana wines, each capturing the essence of this extraordinary Tuscan landscape.

The Grapes

Vernaccia di San Gimignano is a historic grape variety, first cultivated on the rolling hills of San Gimignano. It thrives in the region's clay and schist soils, which date back to the Pliocene era. Recognized for its excellence, it was awarded Italy’s first Denomination of Controlled Origin (DOC) in 1966, followed by the prestigious Denomination of Controlled and Guaranteed Origin (DOCG) in 1993.

Renowned since the Renaissance, Vernaccia di San Gimignano has long been celebrated as one of Italy’s most noble wines. Its reputation is deeply intertwined with the heritage of San Gimignano — a picturesque Tuscan town renowned for its iconic medieval towers and rich viticultural history.
